Medieval town of Loches

Visit one of the most beautiful fortified cities in France …

Just a 10-minute drive from La Bihourderie, the Royal City of Loches is a true medieval treasure, ranked among the “Most Beautiful Detours of France.” With its remarkably well-preserved heritage, Loches stands as an exceptional medieval city in the heart of the Loire Valley.

Step Back in Time in the Citadel

Loches is one of the few medieval towns in France that has retained nearly all of its 12th-century ramparts. Within its historic citadel, you’ll discover some of the most stunning medieval monuments:

  • The Gallo-Roman Keep – Built around the year 1000, this imposing structure is one of the largest and oldest dungeons in Europe.
  • The Collegiate Church of Saint Ours – A magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, featuring a sculpted polychrome portal and two unique pyramidal cupolas—the only ones of their kind in France. Inside rests the tomb of Agnès Sorel, the beloved mistress of King Charles VII.
  • The Royal Apartments – One of the first grand residences built by the Kings of France in the Loire Valley, these apartments welcomed some of history’s most remarkable women, including Agnès Sorel, Joan of Arc, and Anne of Brittany.

…a town to savor and Enjoy

Beyond its rich history, Loches offers a relaxing and charming atmosphere, with delicious restaurants, talented artists, and exceptional local produce contributing to its undeniable sense of well-being.

Throughout the year, Loches hosts a variety of cultural and historical events, from medieval festivals and street theater to night markets and concerts.

For food lovers, the Loches farmers’ market (held on Wednesdays and Saturdays) is one of the largest in Touraine. It’s the perfect place to sample local specialties, including Sainte-Maure de Touraine goat cheese, Géline de Touraine poultry, rillons, and rillettes.
